From Keywords to Conversations: How ELIZA Changed AI 

In a world where chatting with AI feels routine, it’s hard to imagine a time when the idea was pure magic. But in the 1960s, long before Siri, Alexa, or ChatGPT, there was ELIZA, the first chatbot to capture the public’s imagination. And it revealed something unexpected: people were ready to confide in a machine. 

It All Started with a Question 

Can a machine understand human emotion? 

That was what Joseph Weizenbaum, a computer scientist at MIT, set out to explore when he created ELIZA in 1966. His intention was playful, even critical – he wanted to show just how shallow human-computer interactions could be. But what happened next surprised him: people treated ELIZA not just as if it were intelligent, but as if it were empathetic. 

ELIZA was designed to mimic a Rogerian psychotherapist, the kind who doesn’t give advice but reflects the patient’s words back to them. The program scanned inputs for keywords and rephrased them into questions, keeping conversations going with uncanny fluidity for its time. If you typed, “I feel sad,” ELIZA might respond, “Why do you feel sad?” Simple rules, yet they created an illusion of understanding powerful enough to draw people in. 

The most famous example came from Weizenbaum’s own office. After trying ELIZA, his secretary asked him to leave the room so she could continue her “private” conversation with the program. She knew it wasn’t real, but it felt safe, nonjudgmental, and strangely trustworthy. Others had similar experiences. Scientists, academics, and casual users alike opened up to ELIZA in ways they never expected. They felt understood, even though the understanding was only an illusion. 

A Warning in Disguise 

Weizenbaum was stunned by the public’s reaction to ELIZA. He had created it as a critique – a simple program meant to show the limits of what computers could do. ELIZA wasn’t supposed to be taken seriously; it was just a demonstration that machines could mimic conversation without any real thought, feeling, or understanding. 

But people didn’t treat it that way. They shared personal thoughts, confided their emotions, and some even formed emotional bonds with the program. That made Weizenbaum uneasy. He realised humans were quick to believe that a machine could understand them. Even though ELIZA was just a script responding to keywords, people responded as if it had empathy and awareness. 

The experience changed his perspective on AI entirely. He became a vocal critic, cautioning against giving machines responsibilities that belong to humans. Tasks that require emotional intelligence, ethical judgment, or care, like therapy, caregiving, or complex decision-making, should never be delegated to a machine. For Weizenbaum, the real danger wasn’t what AI could do, but how easily people could trust it without understanding its limits. 

A Mirror, not a Mind  

Despite its impact, ELIZA had no understanding of what was being said. It was not intelligent in the way we often think of AI today. It did not learn or adapt. It had no memory of previous messages. What it had was structure. That structure allowed it to reflect the user’s words in ways that made it seem like it was listening.  

What made ELIZA so powerful was not the sophistication of its code, but the psychology of its users. People projected meaning onto ELIZA, much like how children project personalities onto dolls. The machine became a mirror for the human mind. It revealed less about computers and more about ourselves.  

From ELIZA to GPT: Seeds of a Conversation Revolution 

Although ELIZA was limited and simple, it planted a seed that would eventually grow into the complex world of conversational AI we live in today. At its core, ELIZA introduced a basic but groundbreaking idea: people were willing to talk to a computer, and computers could be designed to respond in ways that felt human enough to hold their attention. 

This idea sparked decades of development in natural language processing and machine learning. From basic customer service bots to therapy apps, virtual assistants, and advanced AI models like GPT, the concept of machines holding a conversation has only expanded. Today’s chatbots can answer questions, generate essays, translate languages, and even imitate different personalities. On the therapy front, apps like Woebot, Wysa, and Replika use conversational AI to provide mental health support, mood tracking, and coping exercises, blending empathy with instant accessibility. 

It is ironic that what started as a warning about the limits of machines became the foundation for some of the most advanced AI systems we have. Some researchers saw ELIZA as a challenge: a starting point to create systems capable of understanding language at a deeper level. Others viewed it as a cautionary tale, reminding us to stay grounded about what AI can – and cannot – truly do. 

Regardless of perspective, ELIZA’s influence remains. It changed the way we think about machines, communication, and ourselves. The idea of talking to a computer is no longer strange. In many ways, ELIZA started the conversation that modern AI continues to explore. 

What ELIZA Teaches Us 

Today, when chatbots are everywhere, from answering emails to guiding users through websites and even offering mental health support, ELIZA’s story feels more relevant than ever. It reminds us that people are naturally drawn to treat machines like humans. We often see personality in a well-structured sentence, emotion in a familiar tone, and connection in a fast response. 

Humans are social beings. When we interact with something that responds in a thoughtful or curious way, we tend to assume there’s intention behind it. That’s what made ELIZA so impactful and it’s what makes today’s AI tools feel even more real. Yet as AI becomes more sophisticated, these blurred lines raise important questions. 

Can a machine truly offer emotional support? Or is it just reflecting what we want to hear? Should we rely on AI for sensitive areas like therapy, friendship, or mental health advice? And if so, what rules, limits, or safeguards should be in place to protect users?
