Governance & Risk: Who’s in Charge, and What Could Go Wrong?

AI governance isn’t just an IT issue. It spans legal, compliance, ethics, and frontline operations. If AI is being used across the enterprise, it needs cross-functional oversight.

Ask yourself:

  • What AI systems are live in our organisation today, and who owns them?
    You can’t govern what you can’t see. Many organisations are surprised by how much AI is already in use, often without formal oversight.
  • Do we have an AI governance structure that includes ethics, compliance, and technical leads?
    A governance board or taskforce can help ensure decisions aren’t siloed or short-sighted.
  • Are we using internal or third-party models, and how are we vetting them for safety, bias, and security?
    External models, especially GenAI APIs, can introduce legal and reputational risk if not assessed properly.
  • Do we have a way to detect and respond to bias, drift, or other unintended consequences?
    Continuous monitoring is key. Risks don’t end at deployment; they often begin there.

Regulatory Readiness: Are We Prepared to Show Our Work?

Whether or not you\’re operating in Europe, the EU AI Act and other global frameworks are setting a new bar for transparency, explainability, and documentation. Many of these requirements are becoming common across jurisdictions.

Transparency & Explainability: Can We Show How AI Makes Decisions?

It’s no longer enough to say “the model said so.” Leaders must be able to explain AI behaviour to regulators, employees, and users, especially when decisions have legal or ethical consequences.

Ask yourself:

  • Can we explain how our AI models make decisions, in plain language, for auditors, customers, or internal review?
    This isn’t just a technical task; it’s a trust-building one.
  • Do employees and users know when they’re interacting with AI, and what their options are?
    Transparency includes disclosures, opt-outs, and feedback channels.
  • Are we documenting data sources, model development decisions, and updates?
    Auditability is becoming a baseline expectation, especially in regulated sectors.

Human Oversight & Controls: Are People Still in the Loop Where It Matters?

As AI systems become more autonomous, it’s essential to identify where human intervention is still required – and where it’s missing.

Ask yourself:

  • Do we know which use cases require human review or override, and are we putting those safeguards in place?
    This is especially crucial in HR, healthcare, finance, and public services.
  • Are we setting thresholds for “human-in-the-loop” controls based on risk, rather than convenience?
    Not every task needs a person watching, but critical or irreversible ones often do.

Final Take: Governance Isn’t a Burden. It’s a Business Advantage.

Too often, governance is framed as a brake on innovation. In reality, it\’s the foundation for scale. AI systems that can’t be explained, trusted, or audited will hit regulatory walls, lose customer trust, and stall in implementation.
